After Baobao passed away, we welcomed another hamster into our home, whom we named Bao Bei. Like her predecessor, she and Baobao had this adorable habit of shaking one of their front paws to signal a “no” when offered something they didn’t like.

For instance, I observed Bao Bei displaying this behaviour when called for snack time, trotting cheerfully yet half-eyed and sleepy towards her marble tile. Like people, hamsters exhibit unique personalities and react differently in various situations.

Chewing on cage bars can signal boredom, lack of space, or overgrown teeth. Additionally, frustration with a small cage size may prompt this behaviour. Remember, despite their small size, hamsters require ample space to thrive. They are natural runners, so ensuring a spacious environment is crucial for their well-being.
Both Bao Bei and Bao Bao had a habit of biting the wooden structures aggressively in their cage when frustrated, especially if they couldn’t reach their snacks. To alleviate their boredom, I occasionally provided them with toys to stimulate their minds.
However, if I noticed them becoming frustrated, I would give them the treat right away, especially when introducing new toys. It’s important to be patient and guide your hamster on how to play with the toys. Mastering a new skill could take minutes to months, or they might even forget it if left untouched. In short, patience is key when interacting with these little critters.
Running is inherent to hamsters, but excessive hyperactivity could indicate stress. Offering exercise opportunities, such as a wheel, is essential. However, it is equally important to create an environment that promotes relaxation to balance their activity levels.

Grooming is a regular behaviour for hamsters, indicating their comfort and happiness. They spend time cleaning their fur, paws, and face when content. However, excessive grooming leading to significant fur loss may indicate a potential skin issue requiring veterinary attention.
Each hamster has its own personality. By observing your pet’s behaviour, you can become familiar with its typical demeanour and notice any changes.
