When I was young, my parents would take me to the Chinese medical store in the neighbourhood to drink Liang teh ( cooling tea) or brew my favourite chrysanthemum tea at home. Herbal tea helps us to tone down the heatiness in our bodies. The Tropical weather in Singapore and an unhealthy diet and bad sleep habits contribute to this heatiness resulting in a person falling ill. The practice of drinking herbal teas during my childhood is much like the owner of Herbeco Stella Kiang, perhaps due to the Chinese culture or Malaysia being a neighbouring country.
Stella is a herbalist with a degree in Science, majoring in Biology and Chemistry, at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur and is a third-generation herbalist; she wishes to continue her mother and grandfather’s legacy and cultivate the next generation with the knowledge about local herbs to retain the local herbal species population in Malaysia.
She generously offered to sponsor me with two packets of tea, as I have shared with her that I have specific ailments with my skin keratosis pilaris and acid reflux due to irritable bowel syndrome. She gave me a range of teas to choose from, and I selected the Yellow Cow Wood and Jamaica False Valerian.
The teas are packed in an elegant black zip-locked vacuum-packed bag, each pack consist of 13 sachets of tea. Each tea bag can be used up to 3 times.
Steep a teabag in 700ml of boiled water for 10 minutes in 100°C hot water
Yellow Cow Wood Tea Cleanse Liver and Detoxify – Yellow Cow Wood (黄牛木) or Cratoxylum cochinchinense is traditionally used to reduce body heat, jaundice, flu, Hepatitis A & B and Gastroenteritis as the tea will help to dissipate dampness & relieve stagnation clear heat & remove toxin, dissipate blood stasis & relieve swelling, relieve heatstroke & slake thirst.
Jamaica False Valerian Relief of Bloating, Gas Cramps & Stomach Discomfort – Jamaica False Valerian (马鞭草) or Stachytarpheta jamaicensis tea is a stomach tonic, to improve dyspepsia, asthma, allergies, ease fevers and liver problems.
Jamaica False Valerian tea is thicker than Yellow cow wood tea and has a pleasant herbal fragrance, and tastes not too bitter. Hopefully, with time the tea can help with my digestive system, strengthen my lungs and ease some of my allergies.
In conclusion, I liked both teas and as with Chinese herbs, it takes time to reflect on the improvement in a person’s condition as it focuses on the root of the problem. I would gladly bring this along to work with me to improve my health, it is convenient, and I only need a thermos flask to keep my tea warm to last me the day. Every time I pop in a tea back and take a drink, I feel a very soothing effect within me, the warmth of the tea and the herbs are at work.
