It’s heartwarming to look back on Bao Bei’s, the Dwarf Hamster’s first week in her new home. In this post, I reminisce about those initial days, watching her transition from shy and cautious to a more confident and curious little hammy.

Baby Dwarf Hamster Adjusting to a New Home

During that first week, Bao Bei lived in a temporary, smaller cage while getting used to her surroundings. Although it wasn’t the ideal size for her, it was a necessary step in her adjustment period.

One critical aspect during this time was ensuring that Bao Bei was adequately hydrated, prompting the need for encouragement to drink water.

 She frequently seemed hungry, lingering in her bowl for about 20 minutes as she ate. The rivalry with her siblings over food was fierce, and she didn’t receive much.

I’m happy she now has space and plenty of food to thrive. I fondly remember watching her tiny paws clutching an oat while she nibbled on it, resembling a person enjoying a potato chip.

Training a Dwarf Hamster to Enter a Cup for Safe Transport

One of our favourite memories from that week is teaching Bao Bei to use a cup for easy transportation. With gentle coaxing and plenty of rewards, she quickly learned cues like “go home” and recognised the tipping of the cup as a signal.

I associated the cup with positive experiences, including letting her stay inside with her first sunflower seed. It was beautiful to see her become more comfortable and reassured.

Hamster Fun with Simple Toys

Bao Bei’s playtime was a delight to watch. I introduced her to simple toys like toilet rolls and yarn, and she showed us that hamsters don’t need expensive toys to have fun. Her curiosity and playfulness brought so much joy to my heart.

As a grown hamster, Keeping her “entertained” is more challenging, but I will look into creating more exciting boredom breakers for her.

Another remarkable aspect of our interaction with Bao Bei was the profound emotional connection that developed through her expressive gaze. Through her eyes, she conveyed myriad emotions, from curiosity to contentment, allowing us to understand her needs and desires on a deeper level.
