As a proud hamster owner, my journey with Bao Bei, my dwarf hamster, has been filled with countless moments of joy, curiosity, and learning. Bao Bei’s energetic antics and love for climbing have made her a delightful companion. Still, they’ve also taught me the importance of profoundly understanding how to care for a dwarf hamster.
Recently, I had an interview with Dr. Rina Maguire from Beecroft Animal Specialist & Emergency Hospital, Singapore’s leading exotics companion mammal specialist from Beecroft Animal Specialist & Emergency Hospital.
I inquired about a few concerns about hamsters, and here are her responses.
How often should hamsters come in for check-ups?
Hamsters should be seen for a wellness check every 3-6 months, depending on their life stage and whether they have been diagnosed with any chronic conditions. Geriatric pets or those with pre-existing conditions will naturally require more frequent checks.
A post-purchase exam for any exotic pet is also highly recommended to identify potential health issues and allow the vet to advise the owner on the optimum care and diet of the hamster to prevent mismanagement and nutritional deficiencies.
Are tumours more common in female hamsters, and what should we do if we see signs of tumours?
There are no gender preferences for tumour types in hamsters. Skin tumours are the most common type of cancer seen, followed by bloodline cancers such as lymphoma. External tumours can be seen or felt externally as lumps and bumps. Still, internal tumours may not exhibit outward signs other than certain symptoms, such as general lethargy, anorexia, and weight loss. When the owner suspects there is a sign of a tumour, the hamster needs to be brought in for a diagnostic workup. Early detection will invariably improve treatment outcomes.
What causes wet tails in hamsters, and how can it be prevented or treated?
Wet tail is caused by a bacterial organism called Lawsonia intracellular and can result in large bowel inflammation and severe diarrhea. It can be precipitated by stress and is more common in young hamsters. Other causes of diarrhoea in hamsters not incited by this organism include protozoa, bacterial overgrowth, dysbiosis, dietary indiscretion, and inflammatory bowel syndrome.
To prevent wet tails in younger hamsters, there are some steps for the owner to take:
- Avoid overfeeding sweet foods.
- Maintain good hygiene.
- Deworm your pet post-purchase.
- Minimise stress.

Bao Bei’s Adventures at Home
Bao Bei, now living in a hand-me-down cage from her predecessor, Bao Bao, has a unique personality. While Bao Bao was calm and easygoing, Bao Bei was a climber and explorer. I’ve added tunnels, a two-story house hideout, and a hamster playground to keep her engaged. She’s happiest when scurrying about, hiding treats, or climbing to her heart’s content.
While I do my best to care for Bao Bei at home, knowing that experts like Dr Rina and the Beecroft Avian & Exotics team are available for specialised care gives me peace of mind. Located in Singapore, their advanced medical and surgical care for exotic pets is unparalleled.
You can visit Beecroft Avian & Exotics for more information about their services.
Caring for a hamster like Bao Bei is a rewarding journey filled with challenges and learning opportunities. Regular check-ups, understanding common health issues, and maintaining a stress-free, hygienic environment are vital to ensuring your furry friend lives a long and happy life.
Bao Bei may be small, but her joy in my life is immeasurable. Whether you’re a first-time hamster parent or a seasoned pro, remember that expert advice from Dr Rina is invaluable in providing the best care possible, giving you the confidence and reassurance you need.
Here’s to many more adventures with Bao Bei and a lifetime of love for our furry companions! The joy of pet ownership is a shared experience that brings us together.
